Two-Tiered Yellow and Pink Fondant – my two favourite colours! Every year my family says they will buy me a cake and they feel terrible about me making my own. But I thoroughly love baking and decorating something for myself! This cake was an excuse to try some new recipes and the swirl design on the top tier. Inside I had 2 different types of caramel mud cake. The top tier had quite a golden syrup flavour and the bottom tier tasted more like white chocolate mud… this is why I am still searching for the ultimate caramel mud cakecontinue reading…
My friend asked me to decorate a cake for her dad’s 60th birthday. She had a fruit cake ready to go and the only request was that it had a Parramatta Eels theme. (For any non-Aussies, the Parramatta Eels is one of our major Rugby League clubs. They’re iconic in football). Oh dear, this was not one of my best works… but that’s the fun of learning!! I was kind of organised and managed to make a 3D eel in advance without the final details but I didn’t really think through the ‘how’ of sticking it to the cake… andcontinue reading…
This was my first attempt at cake ‘pops’. I had no sticks as the concept was very new to me (and I think everyone else who wasn’t up on the latest trends in the cake world at the time!). The inspiration came to me after reading my Cake Pops: Tips, Tricks, and Recipes for More Than 40 Irresistible Mini Treats by Bakerella. I have a review on this book. I started out with a packet mix of an apple tea cake which had a beautiful cinnamon sugar topping on it and just used a block of cooking white chocolate with acontinue reading…
Mmm… this was a 2 tiered topsy turvy cake I made for my sister’s birthday. It was chocolate mud (at her request) and my first attempt at making a topsy turvy. I followed the steps of making the shape of the wonky cake from a book that I bought from Amazon: Wedding Cakes You Can Make: Designing, Baking, and Decorating the Perfect Wedding Cake This was a new challenge for me. It was kind of complicated but I got there! Previous to this, I had watched heaps of videos on YouTube and found there are a lot of other methods outcontinue reading…
This two tier white chocolate mud cake was one I threw together once I went back to office work from my first stint of maternity leave. I REALLY missed baking and decorating and made this just for the sake of it one weekend! While I was making this cake, I practiced with my homemade baking strips to achieve the tall cakes and also tried out my new small round cake tins (5″ and 7″). There was nothing too notable about this cake but I wanted to try this color combination, the rolled sausage seal around the tiers and the combination of spotscontinue reading…
I made this 2 tier cake for my son’s first birthday. It was my first attempt at making a 2 tier cake but I was happy with the final result – in fact my sister-in-law thinks it is my best of all time! The bottom tier was white chocolate mud and the top tier was dark chocolate mud so all our guests could choose their favourite flavour. The theme came about because I chose a sea theme for the nursery before my little guy was born and he was given the Fisher Price Musical Seahorse from his grandparents, which sooncontinue reading…
This is one of my favourite cakes and believe it or not, it was about the 7th fondant cake I had ever made! As I was really just getting into the cake decorating life, I offered to make my friend a birthday cake for her daughter turning 1 a couple of weeks before my son. She said she was hoping for a Winnie the Pooh theme. The most difficult part of this cake was getting the balance of pink right with the red of Winnie’s shirt! So off I went to research and practice the main elements of acontinue reading…
This was a cake I made for my friend Bek. She is a single, fun, sassy girl and I told her I would make her a fun single tier cake to cut for dessert at her birthday lunch. Animal print and hot pink was the answer! Baking the Cake I started with a tall 20cm (8″) vanilla buttercake using 2 cake batters. To add to the surprise I added some Wilton Rose coloring to make the inside cake hot pink. Once it cooled I covered it in my buttercream icing recipe and covered the whole cake in smooth white fondant. Creating the Zebra Patterncontinue reading…
This was my first Gift Box Cake. It looked so real that the waiter at the restaurant asked me to remove the ribbon so he could cut the cake! He didn’t believe that it was all edible and made by me… that was an inspiring moment! I went with a whole black and white theme for my husband’s birthday and made him this awesome chocolate gift box cake plus a dozen black and white choc-coffee mud cupcakes with white icing and black stars. So as this was in the early days, I relied on some videos on YouTube to learncontinue reading…
Here are just a few of my first attempts at cake decorating… as you will see, my skills have improved and developed with each and every cake. You won’t be a professional overnight but it will happen!!! Easter Cake Leading up to my son’s Christening, I wanted to practice colouring fondant and work out a rough idea of the ‘look’ of the cake using some of the same elements. This was mainly a trial run of baking two individual 25cm cakes, and timing the baking process. I also learned about levelling the cake and layering the two cakes. This alsocontinue reading…
